My name is Imani and I am a third year Psychology major at Penn State University. Having the opportunity to intern here at Sigea has been an experience like no other. I am so grateful to have been placed in a position where I am able to absorb and learn so much about a country through firsthand experience. In the beginning weeks, Sigea spent ample amounts of time ensuring that I was well-versed in knowledge, history, and details of the environments and tasks ahead. This was a significant measure because it would better prepare me for supporting and hosting certain activities. I believe that in order to instruct, advise, or provide knowledge for something you first have to be pretty knowledgeable about it yourself. Sigea understood this as well and did their best to ensure that. The team here at Sigea includes some of the warmest and welcoming people I have ever interacted with. They are the perfect example of how hard work pays off. Being surrounded by such a strong willed and determined team has given me feelings of motivation and drive.
I feel like working here has definitely taught me the lesson of appreciating the unexpected. As a soon to be first generation graduate, I have a tendency of preferring very detailed and scheduled plans. That being said, unexpected changes or events aren’t always the easiest for me to grab onto. Working at Sigea where some days are a pleasant surprise has taught me to adapt to constantly changing situations. In addition to these practical life lessons that I have learned through Sigea, I have learned other useful skills as well such as overcoming language barriers, confidence with animals, and even some touching up on my public speaking skills. This experience has offered me a perspective of appreciation and knowledge that I’m sure would have never been obtained if it weren’t for Sigea. I am so excited to take the skills and lessons learned and carry them with me moving forward.

Em dic Imani i sóc estudiant de tercer any en Psicología a la Penn State University. Tenir l’oportunitat de fer pràctiques aquí a Sigea ha estat una experiència com cap altra. Estic molt agraïda d’haver estat col·locada en una posició on puc absorbir i aprendre tant sobre un país a través de l’experiència de primera mà. A les primeres setmanes, Sigea va dedicar una gran quantitat de temps assegurant-me que estigués ben versada en coneixements, història i detalls dels entorns i les tasques per endavant. Aquesta va ser una mesura important perquè em prepararia millor per donar suport i acollir determinades activitats. Crec que per instruir, assessorar o proporcionar coneixements sobre alguna cosa primer has de tenir-ne prou coneixements tu mateix. Sigea també ho va entendre i va fer tot el possible per assegurar-ho. L’equip aquí a Sigea inclou algunes de les persones més càlides i acollidores amb les quals he interactuat mai. Són l’exemple perfecte de com amb el treball dur pots creixer. Estar envoltada d’un equip tan fort i decidit m’ha donat sentiments de motivació i empenta.
Sento que treballar aquí m’ha ensenyat definitivament la lliçó d’apreciar l’inesperat. Com a graduat de primera generació, tinc la tendència a preferir plans molt detallats i programats. Dit això, els canvis o esdeveniments inesperats no sempre són els més fàcils d’aferrar-me. Treballar a Sigea on alguns dies són una agradable sorpresa m’ha ensenyat a adaptar-me a situacions en constant canvi. A més d’aquestes lliçons pràctiques de vida que he après a través de Sigea, he après altres habilitats útils, com ara superar les barreres de l’idioma, la confiança amb els animals i fins i tot retocar les meves habilitats per parlar en públic. Aquesta experiència m’ha ofert una perspectiva d’apreciació i coneixement que estic segur que mai no s’hauria obtingut si no fos per Sigea. Estic molt emocionada d’aprofitar aquetes habilitats i les lliçons apreses i portar-les amb mi per continuar creixent.
